Emden at the mouth of the Ems, with its car plant, port and wind-energy production, is the industrial hub of Germany's north-west. Prague is about 740 km by road.

From Emden and East Frisia goods reach the Czech Republic in 1–2 days – Prague is about 740 km away, Brno about 950 km, so most shipments from the North Sea coast are unloaded on day two.

Car plant, port, shipyard and wind: what moves out of East Frisia

The north-western tip of Lower Saxony looks rural, but there is heavy industry at the mouth of the Ems. Emden has a car plant and a port where new cars are shipped out; Papenburg builds large ships; Aurich and Emden make components for wind turbines. For Czech buyers and suppliers the picture looks like this:

PlaceIndustryWhat travels to the Czech Republic or back
Emdencar plantparts from Czech plants to the line, empty racks and returnable containers back
Emden – portvehicle handling, general and project cargogoods discharged from ships and terminal equipment on pallets and in crates
Papenburgbuilding large shipscomponents and interior fittings for the yard, large pieces as special transport
Aurich, Emdenwind energyswitch cabinets, gearboxes and smaller parts on a trailer, oversize with permits
Leer, Nordentea, food, shipownerstea and food on pallets, spare parts for ships

The long run south-east: from the Ems to the D8

From Emden the truck does not go via Hamburg but straight across Germany:

  1. A31 along the Ems via Leer (Ems tunnel) and Lingen to the A30 at Schüttorf,
  2. A30 past Osnabrück to Bad Oeynhausen, then the A2 via Hanover to Magdeburg,
  3. A14 via Halle and Leipzig, A4 to Dresden and A17 to the Breitenau – Krásný Les border,
  4. D8 via Ústí nad Labem to Prague; for Moravia and Slovakia on along the D1.

For South and West Bohemia the route via Kassel, Würzburg and Nuremberg to Rozvadov can be better. German truck toll and Czech motorway charges are included in the price we quote. Because of Germany's Sunday ban over 7.5 t (0:00–22:00), we plan Emden collections so the truck is in the Czech Republic by Saturday at the latest.

North Sea weather and the islands

Strong gales and fog are common on the coast. An empty or lightly loaded curtainsider is sensitive to strong crosswinds, so with light cargo we allow for possible delays. Ferries serve the islands (Borkum from Emden, Norderney and Juist from Norddeich); goods from the islands we take over on the mainland at the port.

How we organise transport from Emden

Parts for the car plant's line run to time windows, and returnable containers travel back the other way, so a Czech Republic – Emden – Czech Republic round trip is well utilised. Oversize components for the shipyard or wind energy are handled as special transport including permits. A full truck takes 33 euro pallets (13.6 loading metres, about 24 t); groupage starts at 1 pallet. Send us the loading place, the address in the Czech Republic or Slovakia, the number and size of packages and the date – you get a price within 30 minutes in office hours and usually a vehicle within 24 hours of confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How many road kilometres is it from Emden to Prague?
About 740 km via Osnabrück, Hanover, Magdeburg and Dresden. Brno is about 950 km, so unloading there is usually on day two.
Why doesn't the truck from Emden go via Hamburg?
Hamburg lies too far north-east and the trip would be longer. It is shorter to take the A31 and A30 to Hanover, then on via Magdeburg and Leipzig to Dresden.
Do you deliver parts from Czech production to the car plant in Emden?
Yes, we deliver parts to the goods-in time windows and bring back empty racks and returnable containers. Such a round trip is usually cheaper than two separate runs.
Will you collect goods discharged from a ship in the port of Emden?
Yes, once released at the port we load general cargo on pallets or in crates. Send us the shipment reference and the terminal where the goods are.
How are large components from the Papenburg shipyard moved?
Oversize pieces travel as special transport on a low-loader with a permit. Smaller parts and interior fittings go on a standard trailer.
Can you handle wind-turbine parts from Aurich?
Yes, switch cabinets, gearboxes or spare parts travel on a curtainsider or open trailer. For oversize components we obtain permits and escorts as required.
Can a North Sea gale hold up the truck?
In strong crosswinds empty or light trailers drive more carefully and sometimes have to wait. With light cargo we therefore build in a buffer; heavy loads are hardly affected.
Will you carry tea or food from Leer to the Czech Republic?
Yes, on pallets in a clean dry vehicle. Food can also join groupage from a single pallet.
How is the price worked out for growing media from the Emsland?
Substrates and peat are light and bulky, so we price them by loading metre. A full truck offers 13.6 loading metres.
Can you pick up goods from the island of Borkum?
We do not drive onto the island; we take the goods over after the ferry at the port in Emden or Norddeich. From there they travel the usual route to the Czech Republic.
When must a load leave Emden to be in Prague on Monday?
Ideally on Thursday or Friday morning. Vehicles over 7.5 t may not drive in Germany on Sundays, so we aim to be across the border on Saturday.
Is German toll on the long run from Emden included?
Yes, toll along the whole German route and the Czech motorway charges are included in the quoted price.
Do I need customs papers for goods from the port of Emden?
If the goods are already cleared or are EU goods, they travel to the Czech Republic duty-free. Goods from non-EU countries must first be cleared – your customs agent handles that.
Can you deliver from East Frisia to Slovakia as well?
Yes, from Prague the truck continues along the D1 via Brno to Bratislava or Žilina. Allow for day two to three.
Is it worth shipping just a few pallets from Emden?
Yes, as groupage from 1 pallet. For urgent production parts a direct van for roughly 5 to 10 pallets is also possible.
