Freight from Finland to the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Freight from Finland to the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Knapek Spedition, based in Břeclav, arranges road freight from Finland to the Czech Republic and Slovakia, usually 3–4 days from loading. From Helsinki the route via the Tallinn ferry and the Via Baltica is about 1,700 km to Prague and 1,650 km to Brno; direct ferries to Travemünde or Gdynia are the alternatives. Typical cargo is paper, timber, building materials, engineering products and food.

We bring goods from Helsinki, Vantaa, Tampere, Turku and other Finnish cities to any address in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Full trucks, part loads or single pallets.

We arrange freight from Finland to the Czech Republic from Helsinki and its surroundings, Tampere, Turku, Lahti and Oulu – from a single pallet in groupage up to a full truck. Delivery usually follows 3–4 days after loading, with the exact date depending on the ferry departure. Knapek Spedition, based in Břeclav, has handled imports from Finland since 2011 together with more than 500 vetted contracted carriers and unloads at any address in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Imports of goods and material from Finland usually mean paper, timber and metal parts. Shipping goods from the Czech Republic to Finland can be arranged in the same enquiry.

Why is freight from Finland different?

There is no practical all-road link between Finland and central Europe – the route round through Lapland and Sweden is far too long. Every consignment therefore includes a sea crossing. Transit time, cost and reliability all hinge on the ferry chosen and on the truck making its planned sailing. That is why we ask not only where the goods are, but exactly what time they will be ready.

Which route does the truck take?

RouteHow it worksWhen we use it
Helsinki–Tallinn + Via Balticaa ferry of roughly two hours across the Gulf of Finland, then by road through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland; about 1,700 km to Prague and 1,650 km to Brnothe standard choice, frequent sailings
Helsinki–Travemündea long direct sailing to northern Germany, then via Berlin and Dresdensensitive goods, deep winter, delivery in Bohemia
Helsinki–Gdyniaa sailing to Poland followed by Polish motorways heading southdelivery in Moravia or Slovakia

Via the Baltics and Poland, Brno is closer than Prague – useful for companies in Moravia. Road tolls and the ferry are included in our price. Polish restrictions are part of the plan: vehicles over 12 t may not run on public holidays and, in summer, during set hours at weekends. On the German leg from Travemünde, vehicles over 7.5 t are banned on Sundays and public holidays from midnight to 10 pm.

How long does freight from Finland to the Czech Republic take?

Typically three to four days from loading to unloading. What counts is when the truck loads and which ferry it catches: goods ready in the morning in Helsinki or Vantaa often sail to Tallinn the same day, whereas a collection in Oulu adds a day of driving within Finland. A double-crewed express shortens the trip, and we confirm the actual date in the quote.

From autumn to spring expect snow and ice. We book vehicles with winter equipment and build in a buffer. Goods that must not freeze travel in a temperature-controlled trailer.

Where in Finland do the goods come from?

Preparing a collection from a Finnish supplier

Finnish companies are very punctual. Warehouses open early, late-afternoon loading is unusual and on Fridays rarer still. Distribution centres around Vantaa require a booked slot and an order number. Paper reels, boards or windows are often loaded from the side or top, so we need to know whether the supplier has a dock. Check in advance:

  • the exact address and operating hours of the warehouse,
  • the reference under which the goods will be released,
  • loading method – dock, side, or from above by crane or forklift,
  • number of pallets or pieces, dimensions, weight and stackability,
  • for windows and glass, packaging and securing on racks,
  • the date and hour when the goods will genuinely be ready.

Summer means holidays: around Midsummer in June and throughout July many Finnish firms scale down or close completely. Agree orders for that period well ahead.

Is it worth shipping just a few pallets from Finland?

Yes. With groupage you do not have to wait until you can fill a whole truck – we move single pallets too. Your goods travel with other consignments via a cross-dock and take a little longer than a direct run. For larger volumes a part load without transhipment is the better deal.

One euro pallet occupies 0.4 ldm. Twenty pallets therefore need about 8 ldm – more than half a trailer – and at that point we compare the part load with the price of a whole truck.

Can goods from several Finnish suppliers be combined?

Yes, ideally along the Tampere – Lahti – Helsinki or Turku – Helsinki axes, where the truck makes no detours on its way to the port. Give us every address and ready time; we sequence the collections so the ferry is caught and deliver to one or more places in Czechia or Slovakia.

The delivery term decides who arranges transport. Under EXW and FCA the buyer books it – you, through us. Under DAP the Finnish seller takes care of it. Booking through us pays off when you want to consolidate shipments or control the timing yourself.

Documents, customs and the Åland exception

Finland is in the EU and Schengen, so goods from mainland Finland travel duty-free with an invoice or delivery note and a CMR consignment note. The Åland Islands are the exception: they lie outside the EU tax territory, so shipments from there need formalities handled by a customs representative. For a quote, send us the loading address, operating hours, reference, pallets or ldm, weight, type of goods and delivery address. During office hours we reply within 30 minutes, and after confirmation a vehicle is usually arranged within 24 hours. Shipping to Finland as well? See transport to Finland.

Frequently asked questions

When will goods loaded in Vantaa be in Prague?
Count on 3–4 days after loading. The route via Tallinn and the Baltics is about 1,700 km including the ferry.
Why is Brno closer to Finland than Prague?
The road through Poland enters the Czech Republic in northern Moravia, so Brno is about 1,650 km away and Prague about 1,700 km.
Will my shipment go via Tallinn or straight to Germany by ship?
Most often by ferry to Tallinn and along the Via Baltica. We pick the direct ferry to Travemünde when saving road kilometres pays off.
Is the ferry across the Gulf of Finland included in the price?
Yes, the ferry plus the Baltic road charges, the Polish e-TOLL and the Czech toll are all part of the quote.
When does the Helsinki–Gdynia ferry make sense?
Mainly for deliveries in Moravia or Slovakia when the sailing fits the date. From Gdynia the truck heads south on Polish motorways.
Do goods from the Åland Islands need customs papers?
Yes, Åland lies outside the EU tax territory. The shipper's customs agent handles the formalities; goods from mainland Finland travel without customs.
Does the Finnish winter delay delivery?
Snow, ice on the roads or sea ice can add several hours or more. In winter we plan with a margin and arrange vehicles with winter equipment.
Do you load in Tampere or Oulu?
Yes, Tampere regularly. Oulu is several hundred kilometres further north, so we give its transit time in the quote.
Do you carry Finnish paper and board?
Yes, on pallets or as reels in a closed vehicle, protected from moisture. Please give the dimensions and weight of the pieces.
Can you bring sawn timber, insulation or windows from Finland?
Yes, palletised building materials are a regular load. For windows and glass, firm packaging and upright securing matter.
How many countries does a truck from Finland pass through?
Via Tallinn it crosses Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland before reaching the Czech Republic. All are EU members, so there is no customs clearance at the borders.
How do Juhannus and the Finnish summer holidays affect loading?
Around the Midsummer holiday at the end of June and during the July holiday season many firms are closed. Summer loadings are best agreed early.
Are three or four pallets from Tampere too few for such a long trip?
Not at all – they ride in groupage, where several customers share the truck and the ferry fare over the 1,700 km.
Does Finnish cargo for Žilina or Košice have to go via Prague first?
No, through Poland the truck reaches Slovakia from the north directly. Any Slovak address can be the unloading point.
Can Czech goods travel to Finland on the return run?
Yes, loads bound for Helsinki are welcome too. For steady customers we align the northbound and southbound legs.
