Freight from Freiburg and South Baden to the Czech Republic

Knapek Spedition, based in Břeclav, arranges road freight from Freiburg im Breisgau and South Baden to the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Freiburg is about 660 km from Prague and about 860 km from Brno, and goods reach the consignee in 1–2 days. Typical cargo is medical and measuring equipment, machinery, wine, confectionery and wood products; goods from Germany travel without customs, goods from Switzerland need export and transit papers.

From Freiburg, Offenburg, Lahr, Lörrach and Weil am Rhein near Basel we arrange freight to the Czech Republic and Slovakia – full trucks, part loads and groupage from 1 pallet. We also explain when a CMR is enough at the three-country corner and when a customs document is needed.

Freight from Freiburg to the Czech Republic takes 1–2 days – Freiburg im Breisgau is about 660 km from Prague and about 860 km from Brno, and the truck runs mostly on the A5, A6 and D5.

Breisgau, Ortenau and Markgräflerland: where the cargo comes from

  • Freiburg – medical and measuring equipment, solar and environmental technology, university and research labs
  • Offenburg – printing, mechanical engineering and metalworking on the A5 at the mouth of the Kinzig valley
  • Lahr – warehouses and logistics centres by the A5
  • Lörrach – confectionery and food, a textile tradition
  • Weil am Rhein – Rhine port, warehouses on the Swiss border, and furniture
  • Kaiserstuhl and Markgräflerland – wine; in the Black Forest, wood products and precision mechanics

The three-country corner at Basel: when a CMR is enough and when customs papers are needed

South Baden borders both France and Switzerland. France is in the EU like Germany; Switzerland is not. What matters is where the goods actually start and what customs status they have.

Where the goods startPaperwork
Lörrach, Weil am Rhein, Freiburg (Germany)EU goods – invoice or delivery note and CMR, no customs
Saint-Louis, Mulhouse, Colmar (France)EU goods – same as from Germany, no customs
Basel and the rest of SwitzerlandSwiss export plus a transit or import document into the EU – handled by the shipper's customs agent
Swiss goods already cleared in a warehouse in Weil am RheinEU goods in free circulation – just invoice and CMR

We arrange the transport; we do not carry out customs clearance ourselves. For a Swiss pick-up we need to know the shipper's customs agent and the crossing where the goods are cleared, and we build that time into the schedule.

The route: north on the A5, then east to Rozvadov

From South Baden the truck runs north on the A5 along the Rhine via Offenburg to Karlsruhe. There it turns east – on the A8 via Stuttgart or the A6 via Heilbronn – and continues via Nuremberg to the Waidhaus – Rozvadov crossing and on the D5 to Prague. For Brno and Slovakia it carries on along the D1. German and Czech tolls are included in the quoted price. In Germany vehicles over 7.5 t may not run on Sundays and public holidays from 0:00 to 22:00, so we schedule a Friday pick-up in Lörrach early in the morning.

Instruments, wine and confectionery: how they travel

Medical and measuring instruments go in a closed vehicle, unstacked and secured against shifting. Kaiserstuhl wine and Lörrach confectionery need controlled temperature in summer, and wine also needs frost protection in winter. A full truck takes 33 euro pallets, 13.6 loading metres and about 24 t; smaller consignments join our groupage from 1 pallet.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Freiburg shipment reach Brno as quickly as Prague?
Prague is about 660 km away and Brno about 860 km. The Moravian leg is a couple of hundred kilometres longer, yet goods usually arrive there within 1–2 days too.
Does the truck from Freiburg pass through Switzerland?
No. The whole route runs on German motorways via Karlsruhe and Nuremberg, so goods from Baden cross no customs border on the way.
Do goods from Lörrach or Weil am Rhein need customs papers?
No. Although both towns sit right on the Swiss border, they are German – their goods are Union goods, and an invoice plus CMR will do.
Can you collect a shipment directly in Basel?
Yes, but Switzerland is not in the EU. Export and transit or import documents are handled by the shipper's customs agent; we arrange the truck and the transport to the Czech Republic.
What if Swiss goods have already been cleared in a warehouse in Weil am Rhein?
Then they are EU goods in free circulation and travel to the Czech Republic with just an invoice and CMR, with no further customs procedure.
Why does a truck from Lörrach first head north to Karlsruhe?
The direct roads over the Black Forest are slow for trucks, so it follows the A5 along the Rhine and only turns east at Karlsruhe towards Nuremberg and Rozvadov.
Do you carry wine from the Kaiserstuhl or Markgräflerland?
Yes. Palletised bottles travel in a closed vehicle, temperature-controlled in summer and frost-protected in winter; several wineries can be combined on one run.
How do you transport medical equipment from Freiburg?
In a closed vehicle, unstacked and secured against shifting. We need the dimensions, weight and whether the goods are sensitive to shocks or temperature.
Can pick-ups in Offenburg and Lahr be combined?
Yes. Both towns lie on the A5 on the way north, so the second stop barely lengthens the run.
Will you add pallets from Mulhouse or Colmar?
Yes. Alsace is just across the Rhine and French goods travel without customs. We only plan the loading outside the French ban for vehicles over 7.5 t, Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00.
Do you carry wood products from the Black Forest?
Yes. Timber and wooden goods travel covered so they stay dry, in a curtainsider or box trailer depending on how they are loaded.
I only have 2 pallets in Lörrach – is it worth it?
Yes. Two pallets join our groupage from 1 pallet or another South Baden load, so you do not pay for a whole truck.
Does confectionery from Lörrach need cooling in summer?
Yes, chocolate and similar sweets travel temperature-controlled in the warm months so they do not melt on the way.
Do you move solar panels from Freiburg?
Yes. Panels on pallets travel in a closed vehicle, positioned as the manufacturer specifies, with no other goods stacked on top.
Do you deliver from Freiburg to Slovakia as well?
Yes. From Prague the truck continues on the D1 via Brno, and we can split the load between several places in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
