The port of Trieste: ships from Turkey, containers and the free port

Trieste is the northernmost port of the Adriatic and for Central Europe one of the shortest routes to the sea. Scheduled ro-ro ships bring trailers in from Turkish ports, and the container quay handles goods from Asia and the Middle East. Part of the port has free-port status (Porto Franco), so goods can be stored there without customs clearance. Clearance or a transit document for goods from Turkey or overseas is handled by the importer's customs agent; we take over with the road leg from the warehouse or terminal.

  • trailers and pallets off the Turkish ro-ro ships, often textiles, food and parts,
  • container cargo once it has been unpacked in the port warehouses,
  • coffee and other raw goods from the warehouses around the port.

Over Tarvisio and Villach: the road north

From Trieste the A4 runs to Palmanova, then the A23 passes Udine and climbs the Fella valley to Tarvisio. After Villach the route splits: for Brno, Břeclav and Slovakia the truck takes the A2 via Klagenfurt and Graz to Vienna and on through Mikulov or Bratislava; for Bohemia it takes the Tauern motorway, Salzburg and Linz to Dolní Dvořiště. That is why Brno is nearer than Prague. Italy bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays, and Austria has its weekend ban from Saturday 15:00 plus night restrictions. Autostrada tolls, the Austrian toll including the tunnel section charges and the Czech or Slovak toll are all included in the price we quote.

Chairs, appliances and machines: how they travel

Chairs from Manzano go in cartons on pallets or as loose pieces, appliances stand upright in their original packaging and must not be tilted, and machines from Udine need lashing straps and anti-slip mats. A full truck takes 33 euro pallets or 13.6 loading metres up to about 24 t; smaller lots go as groupage from one pallet. EU goods travel without customs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a truck take from Trieste to Brno?
Usually 1–2 days from loading. Brno is about 620 km away, so after a morning collection the goods are often there the next morning.
Why is Trieste closer to Brno than to Prague?
The shortest road runs via Tarvisio, Graz and Vienna straight into South Moravia. Prague is about 750 km away because the truck has to cross the Alps via Salzburg and Linz.
Do you take over pallets from the ro-ro ships from Turkey?
Yes, we collect pallets from Turkish ships at the warehouse or terminal in Trieste. Customs formalities must be completed by the importer's customs agent first.
What does the free-port zone in Trieste mean for collection?
Goods can be stored there uncleared. Before they go to the Czech Republic the customs agent must clear them or issue a transit document; we then arrange the transport.
Will you collect chairs in Manzano or San Giovanni al Natisone?
Yes, in cartons on pallets or as single pieces. Send us the number of cartons and their size so we can work out the loading metres.
Do you carry washing machines and dishwashers from Pordenone?
Yes, on pallets in their original packaging, upright and without tilting. A full truck takes 33 euro pallets.
Can one truck load in both Udine and Pordenone?
Yes, both lie close to the A23 and A28 motorways. Two collections in Friuli fit into one day.
Which border crossing into Austria does a truck from Trieste use?
Usually Tarvisio – Arnoldstein on the A23/A2. Both countries are in Schengen, so there is normally no waiting at the border.
Does freight from Trieste go through Slovenia?
For Moravia and Slovakia we usually go via Tarvisio and Villach. The route through Slovenia and Maribor is possible, depending on the unloading point and traffic.
Does the Austrian weekend ban affect a Friday collection in Trieste?
It can. Trucks may not drive in Austria from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00, so we time a Friday collection to get the truck through Austria in time.
Can you move steel parts or a machine from around Udine?
Yes, depending on size and weight we choose a curtain-sider or an open trailer. Send us the dimensions, the weight and how it can be loaded.
Can goods from Trieste go to both Bratislava and Brno?
Yes, the route via Vienna passes both cities. We combine the drops in Bratislava and Brno into one run.
Are the Tauern tunnel toll included in a price from Trieste?
All tolls and section charges on the route are included in the price we quote. Nothing is added afterwards.
Do you carry wine from Collio and the Gorizia area?
Yes, wine travels with the excise accompanying document issued by the shipper. Without it the wine cannot be loaded.
Do you also run from the Czech Republic to Trieste for the ships to Turkey?
Yes, we deliver pallets from the Czech Republic and Slovakia to a warehouse in Trieste, where they continue by sea. On the way back the truck often loads goods in Friuli.
