Chips, timber and paper: what Carinthia sends north

  • Villach – semiconductor and electronics production, plus parts and consumables for cleanrooms; at Fürnitz a freight terminal close to the Italian border
  • Klagenfurt – electronics and IT hardware from the technology park by the Wörthersee, food, wholesale warehouses
  • St. Veit an der Glan – wood-based panels and building components
  • Wolfsberg and the Lavant valley – paper and paper packaging, fruit from the valley's orchards
  • Spittal an der Drau and the Drava valley – sawn timber, glulam and cross-laminated timber for timber construction
  • Radenthein – refractory materials made from magnesite

Electronics from Villach travel in a closed vehicle, in the shipper's ESD packaging, unstacked and with as few transfers as possible. Timber building elements need a curtain or box body to keep them dry, and long pieces often take the whole trailer.

Pack or Tauern? Picking the route by destination

DestinationUsual route from Carinthia
Brno, Znojmo, southern and central MoraviaA2 over the Pack – Graz – Vienna – Mikulov – D52
Bratislava, Trnava, NitraA2 over the Pack – Graz – Vienna – Bratislava
Ostrava, Zlín, ŽilinaA2 – Vienna – Brno – D1

Prague, Plzeň, central and western BohemiaA10 through the Tauern – Salzburg – Linz – D3

The Pack section carries no special toll but runs high and is often snowy in winter. The Tauern A10 and the Pyhrn A9 have tolled tunnel sections. Austrian GO-Maut, section tolls and Czech and Slovak tolls are all included in the quoted price.

Austrian rules that shape the schedule

In Austria trucks over 7.5 t may not run from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00 or on public holidays, and further restrictions apply at night. In summer, Saturday bans are added on the main holiday routes, including the A10 towards the Tauern. We therefore plan Friday pick-ups in Carinthia for the morning, so the truck reaches the Czech Republic before the weekend. Goods from Austria travel without customs.

How fast you get a price from Carinthia

Send the pick-up place, the address in the Czech Republic or Slovakia, pallet count, weight and, for timber, the length of the pieces. In office hours you have a price within 30 minutes, and on a route this short loading often happens the same or next day. A full truck takes 33 euro pallets, 13.6 loading metres and about 24 t; smaller shipments go as groupage from 1 pallet.

Frequently asked questions

Klagenfurt to Brno versus Klagenfurt to Prague – how many kilometres each way?
The shortest way to Moravia runs on the A2 through Graz and Vienna to Mikulov. Brno is about 460 km away, Prague – reached via the Tauern or Pyhrn and Linz – about 550 km.
Tauern motorway or Pyhrn – which do you use for a Villach load to central Bohemia?
Usually the A10 through the Tauern to Salzburg, then the A1 to Linz and over the Dolní Dvořiště crossing onto the D3 to Prague.
Is the Pack passable for trucks in winter?
Yes, it is the A2 motorway, but it runs high and traffic slows in snow. In winter we build that into the delivery time.
Is the Tauern tunnel toll charged on top?
No. The section toll for the tunnels on the A10 and the Pyhrn A9 is included in the quote, as are the GO-Maut and the Czech toll.
Can you move electronics and semiconductor parts from Villach?
Yes, in a closed vehicle, in the shipper's ESD packaging, unstacked and ideally without transfer – straight from pick-up to consignee.
Do you carry cross-laminated timber from Spittal an der Drau?
Yes. Large panels travel on a curtain-sider that can be loaded from the side or the top; we need the dimensions and weight of each element.
Will you collect paper and packaging in the Lavant valley near Wolfsberg?
Yes. Reels and pallets of paper packaging travel in a dry, closed vehicle; Wolfsberg sits right on the A2, on the direct route to Moravia.
Can pick-ups in St. Veit an der Glan and Klagenfurt be combined?
Yes, the two are only a short drive apart, so the second pick-up hardly lengthens the trip.
Do you transport refractory materials from Radenthein?
Yes. Heavy refractory shapes on pallets are spread so the axle loads are right; weight, not volume, usually fills the truck.
Is the Slovak capital within easy reach of Wörthersee warehouses?
Very much so – the truck stays on the A2 over the Pack to Graz and Vienna and crosses into Slovakia at Kittsee; Bratislava is nearer to Klagenfurt than Prague is.
Does a shipment to Žilina go via Vienna and Brno?
Yes, that is the usual way: Vienna to Brno and on along the D1 towards Ostrava and the Kysuce region, or via Bratislava and the Slovak D1.
What do the summer Saturday bans on the A10 mean?
In summer Austria adds Saturday restrictions for trucks on its main holiday routes. On the Tauern route we plan summer runs so they do not fall into them.
Is it worth sending two carton pallets of electronics from Villach?
Yes. They ride north with other Carinthian consignments and you pay only for the floor space they use, not the whole trailer.
Can you pick up goods from Friuli on the way?
Yes. Loads from Friuli enter Austria at Arnoldstein right next to Villach and can be combined with a Carinthian pick-up; goods from Italy travel without customs.
Could a Moravian supplier fill the truck on its way back to the Drava valley?
Often – bricks, fittings, machine parts or furniture bound for Carinthian builders and wholesalers fill the southbound leg and cut the cost of your northbound run.
