A truck from Magdeburg reaches the Czech Republic within 1 day – Prague is about 380 km away, Brno about 580 km, and goods loaded in Magdeburg in the morning are often unloaded in Prague that evening.
Along the Elbe axis to Bohemia: the route with driving times
The Elbe has always linked Magdeburg with Bohemia. The truck does not follow the river valley all the way, but it keeps to the same axis – via Halle and Dresden to Ústí nad Labem. Approximate pure driving times, without loading or breaks:
- Magdeburg – Halle (Saale): A14 across the Magdeburg Börde, about 85 km, roughly 1 h 10 min
- Halle – Leipzig – Dresden: A14 to the Nossen motorway junction, then the A4, about 150 km, roughly 2 hours
- Dresden – Breitenau / Krásný Les: A17 over the eastern Ore Mountains, about 40 km, roughly 35 minutes
- Krásný Les – Ústí nad Labem – Prague: D8 through the Bohemian Central Uplands, about 90 km, roughly 1 h 15 min
That adds up to about five hours behind the wheel, which makes Magdeburg one of the few larger cities in northern Germany where loading and unloading in Prague fit into one working day. For Moravia and Slovakia the truck continues on the D1 via Brno, and Slovak delivery points follow the next day. German tolls on the A14, A4 and A17 and Czech tolls on the D8 and D1 are included in the price we quote. In Germany, trucks over 7.5 t may not drive on Sundays and public holidays from 0:00 to 22:00.
Magdeburg's port lies at the waterway junction where the Mittelland Canal crosses the Elbe on an aqueduct more than 900 metres long. Goods that arrive by barge and are unloaded at the port can continue to the Czech Republic by truck.
What gets loaded between the Altmark and Halle
- Magdeburg – a heavy-engineering tradition: gearboxes, steel structures and metal parts
- Magdeburg Börde (Wanzleben, Barleben) – fertile loess soil, sugar beet and grain; sugar, flour and baking ingredients in sacks on pallets
- Halle (Saale) and the A14 corridor – large distribution centres of retail chains and online shops with mixed palletised goods
- Dessau-Roßlau – metalworking and engineering suppliers
- Bitterfeld-Wolfen – a large industrial park; finished goods on pallets, often as a part load combined with Halle
- Stendal and Arneburg – a pulp mill on the Elbe and wood processing; pulp bales and paper products
Heavy sacks, machinery and mixed pallets
A full truck takes 33 euro pallets, 13.6 loading metres and about 24 t. With sugar, flour or pulp you hit the weight limit before the floor is full, so we need the exact weight, not just the pallet count. Food travels in a clean, odour-free covered vehicle. Gearboxes and steel parts are secured with straps or chains and their weight is spread along the trailer. Single pallets go into groupage; if the goods are urgent, a van for about 5 pallets or a larger van for about 10 runs straight to Prague without transhipment. Goods from Germany are EU goods and travel without customs.
A quote from Saxony-Anhalt in three steps
- Send the loading address with postcode – Magdeburg, Halle, Stendal or elsewhere – and the delivery point in the Czech Republic or Slovakia.
- Give the number and size of the pallets, the total weight and whether they can be stacked.
- Add the loading day you need and any time slot set by the warehouse.
During office hours we reply within 30 minutes. A vehicle is usually arranged within 24 hours of confirmation, and on this short route often the same or the next day.
