From St. Pölten, Krems and the Traisen valley your goods reach the Czech Republic within 1 day – Brno is only about 160 km away by road, so a morning pick-up and an afternoon delivery in South Moravia are routine; Prague is about 280 km.
Factories between the Danube and the Alpine foothills
Lower Austria's capital and its surroundings from Krems to Amstetten have an industry of their own. Along the Traisen river and the A1 West motorway there are metalworking and engineering plants whose parts end up in Czech and Slovak production:
- Traisen valley (Traisen, Herzogenburg) – steel processing, wire, springs, steel parts and semi-finished products.
- Amstetten and the Mostviertel – machine building, machine parts, welded structures, tubes and metal components.
- St. Pölten – food production, paper and packaging, distribution from logistics sites on the A1.
- Krems an der Donau – metalworking in the industrial area by the Danube and food from the surrounding region.
- Melk and the Wachau – wine, fruit (apricots above all in the summer season) and regional food.
Two ways north: via Vienna and Mikulov, or via Krems and Znojmo
There is no single right route from St. Pölten into the Czech Republic. We pick it by the delivery address:
| Route | Roads and crossing | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Motorway east | A1 towards Vienna, the bypass, A5 to Drasenhofen / Mikulov, then D52 | Brno, Břeclav, Hodonín, the Zlín region and Slovakia via Lanžhot |
| Northern short cut | S33 to Krems, via Horn to the Kleinhaugsdorf / Hatě crossing near Znojmo | Znojmo, Jihlava, the Vysočina region and Prague on the D1 |
| Straight to Bratislava | A1 and the Vienna outer ring, A4 / A6 to Kittsee | Bratislava, Trnava and western Slovakia |
The northern short cut has less motorway and more villages, but for Vysočina it avoids the detour round Vienna and its morning jams. Austrian distance-based truck toll and Czech toll on the D1 and D52 are included in the price we quote.
Wire, weldments and machines: loading around St. Pölten
Steel products from the Traisen valley are small in volume and heavy. Wire coils or bundles of bars reach the trailer's payload while half the deck is still empty, so we need the weight and size of each piece. Loading is often by overhead crane or by forklift from the side, so we book a curtainsider with a sliding roof and removable side boards. Coils on pallets are secured with wedges, anti-slip mats and straps. Machines from Amstetten on steel frames have to spread their weight over several axles; for oversize items the carrier arranges the permits. Czech production lines work with unloading windows and we plan departure to match them. Empty returnable pallets and transport racks can ride back to Austria on the same vehicle.
Saturdays, nights and holidays in Austria
Trucks over 7.5 t may not run in Austria from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00 or on public holidays, and further restrictions apply at night. Goods loaded on a Friday afternoon are therefore usually delivered in South Moravia that evening or on Monday morning. Austria and the Czech Republic are both in the EU and Schengen – no customs papers, a CMR note and delivery note are enough.
What to put in a request from St. Pölten
- Pick-up point (St. Pölten, Traisen, Amstetten, Krems…) and whether there is a dock or a crane.
- Delivery address in the Czech Republic or Slovakia and the receiving window.
- Number of pallets or pieces, weight and dimensions – for steel, ideally the weight per piece.
You get a quote within 30 minutes during office hours. On this short route we often arrange the vehicle the same or next day after you confirm; our groupage service takes consignments from one pallet.
