What is the route from the Czech Republic to Greece?
There are three ways to Greece. The shortest runs through Hungary, Serbia and North Macedonia to Thessaloniki – about 1,700 km from Prague and around 2,200 km to Athens. Serbia and North Macedonia are outside the EU, so the goods travel under a transit customs document and there is waiting time for clearance at the borders.
The EU-only route goes via Romania and Bulgaria (the Calafat–Vidin bridge and the Kulata–Promachonas crossing) – longer, but without customs formalities. The third option is the ferry from the Italian ports of Ancona or Bari to Igoumenitsa and Patras, suited to western Greece. According to our transit time overview we plan 3–4 days from loading.

What do we transport to Greece?
To Greece we carry engineering products, building materials, packaging, glass and palletised goods for distribution centres around Athens and Thessaloniki. There are also frequent shipments to the port of Piraeus, one of the largest container ports in the Mediterranean.
For the route through Serbia we prepare the transit document (T1) in advance – for that we need the invoice, goods value and customs tariff code.
Which tolls and rules apply in Greece?
- Tolls: Hungary charges the distance-based HU-GO toll, Serbia and North Macedonia have motorway toll plazas, and Greece has tolled motorways (such as the Egnatia Odos or the Athens–Thessaloniki motorway) and the Rio–Antirrio bridge.
- Driving ban: Greece restricts truck traffic mainly on major holidays and during the summer holiday period. Greek Orthodox Easter falls on a different date from Central European Easter – we track it in our calendar.
- Borders: at the Serbia–Hungary and North Macedonia–Greece crossings there is waiting time for customs clearance, in summer several hours.
- Islands: for Greek islands (Crete, Rhodes) the truck takes a ferry from Piraeus; the transport takes longer by the crossing time.
