What is the route from the Czech Republic to Bulgaria?
There are two ways to Bulgaria. The EU-only route runs through Slovakia, Hungary and Romania – via Budapest, Timișoara and Craiova to the Calafat–Vidin Danube Bridge and on to Sofia. Brno to Sofia is about 1,180 km and Prague around 1,400 km. For the east of the country (Ruse, Varna) we drive via Bucharest and the Giurgiu–Ruse bridge.
The shorter route goes through Serbia (Belgrade, Niš) to the Kalotina crossing, but Serbia is not in the EU – the goods therefore travel under a transit customs document and there is waiting at the borders. According to our transit time overview we plan delivery within 3 days of loading.

What do we transport to Bulgaria?
To Bulgaria we carry engineering products, parts for automotive component makers around Plovdiv and Sofia, building materials, packaging, glass and palletised goods for distribution centres around Sofia. We also run regularly to the ports of Varna and Burgas.
Because the route via Romania is long, we combine smaller shipments for Bulgaria with goods for Romania and Hungary.
Which tolls and rules apply in Bulgaria?
- Tolls: Hungary charges HU-GO, Romania the distance-based TollRo toll from 1 October 2026, and a bridge toll applies on the Calafat–Vidin or Giurgiu–Ruse Danube bridge. Bulgaria charges an electronic distance-based toll for vehicles over 3.5 t.
- Driving ban: the Hungarian weekend ban applies on the way; in Romania the road authority may restrict heavy vehicles during the day in extreme heat.
- Schengen: Bulgaria has been a full Schengen member since 1 January 2025, so there is no waiting at the Romanian border. The border with Serbia is an external EU border.
- Currency: Bulgaria has used the euro since 2026.
