How does the Prague → Dresden route run?
The Prague → Dresden route is about 150 km and runs entirely on motorways: the D8 via Lovosice and Ústí nad Labem, the Krásný Les – Breitenau border crossing and the A17 into Dresden. Trucks always take the D8 and A17, not the old road over Cínovec/Zinnwald through the Ore Mountains.
Thanks to the short distance, loading in Prague and unloading in Dresden fit into a single morning. For just-in-time production we therefore often run several rounds a day or deliver into an exact time window.
Where do we load and unload between Prague and Dresden?
In Dresden we unload in the industrial areas in the north of the city near Klotzsche airport, in Ottendorf-Okrilla and Radeberg, and in Freital, Heidenau or Kesselsdorf at the A4/A17 junction. Deliveries to Pirna, Meißen and Coswig are also frequent.
On the Czech side we load in and around Prague and often along the D8 – in Mělník, Lovosice, Ústí nad Labem or Teplice – so the route also suits groupage shipments from North Bohemia.
What is shipped between Prague and Dresden?
The Dresden area is home to Silicon Saxony, one of Europe's largest semiconductor clusters. Shipments here include technical components, packaging and consumables, cleanroom equipment and machine parts – goods that need careful handling and a clean, dry vehicle.
Engineering and automotive parts, food and drinks for wholesale, furniture and building materials are also common. For sensitive goods we arrange a box-body vehicle or a van running direct without transhipment.
What to watch out for on the Prague → Dresden route
- In the Czech Republic the electronic toll is charged on the D8 for vehicles over 3.5 t; in Germany the toll applies on the A17 and on all federal roads.
- Driving ban for vehicles over 7.5 t: in Germany on Sundays and public holidays 00:00–22:00, in the Czech Republic on Sundays and public holidays 13:00–22:00. Saxony also observes 31 October and the Day of Repentance and Prayer in November – see our driving ban calendar.
- The D8 section over the Ore Mountains beyond Ústí nad Labem near Knínice and Krásný Les is often snowy and foggy in winter, so we plan with a buffer.
- Dresden's historic centre and pedestrian zones have restricted delivery hours, so city-centre drops are planned for the morning.
- Plants in Silicon Saxony usually have strict goods-receipt rules – vehicle pre-registration, time slots and driver safety briefings. We send driver and vehicle details in advance.
