Parcel, pallet or truck? How to choose the right way to ship

Parcel, pallet or truck? How to choose the right way to ship

Single light items (typically up to 30–40 kg and of manageable size) are best sent by a parcel service. From several cartons or heavier items it is better to put the goods on a pallet and ship them by pallet transport or as a part load. From about 6–7 loading metres or 5 tonnes a full truck pays off; for urgent shipments a van on a direct run.

What decidesweight and size per piece, number of pieces, deadline

The same goods can be shipped in several ways — as parcels, on a pallet as a part load, or with a whole vehicle. The right choice saves money and trouble with damage. What matters most is the weight and size of one piece, the number of pieces and the deadline.

When a parcel service is enough

Parcel services are built for single light items — usually up to 30–40 kg and limited dimensions depending on the provider. Parcels pass through automated sorting lines, are transhipped several times and travel with thousands of other shipments. For one or a few cartons it is the cheapest and simplest option.

It becomes a problem with dozens of cartons or heavy and fragile goods: each piece travels separately, may be delayed or lost, and repeated handling increases the risk of damage.

When to put the goods on a pallet

Once you have several cartons, heavier items or goods sensitive to handling, it pays to put them on a pallet. The pallet is loaded and unloaded by forklift as one unit, individual pieces are not handled and the shipment arrives together. How to wrap a pallet properly is explained in How to prepare pallets for transport.

A few pallets travel as a part load — sharing the vehicle with other shipments, and you only pay for the space they take. More on the pallet transport page and in FTL vs. LTL.

When to book a dedicated vehicle

Urgent, a few palletsvan on a direct run (up to 5 pallets, curtain-sided van up to 10)
Medium shipment, 6–15 pallets7.5-tonne truck or part load, depending on the deadline
From about 6–7 loading metres or 5 tfull truck (up to 33 euro pallets, 24 t)

A dedicated vehicle runs directly from consignor to consignee without transhipment — the fastest and gentlest option for the goods. See vehicle types and the comparison Van or truck?

What to consider when deciding

  • Weight and size of one piece — above parcel limits, a pallet is the way.
  • Number of pieces — many cartons are safer together on a pallet.
  • Deadline — a direct run is faster than a groupage network.
  • Sensitivity of the goods — fragile and valuable goods fare better without transhipment.
  • Loading and unloading — without a dock and forklift you need a vehicle with a tail lift.

Frequently asked questions

When is a parcel service worth it?
For single light items, usually up to 30–40 kg and limited dimensions depending on the provider.
When is pallet shipping better?
With several cartons, heavier items or goods sensitive to handling — the pallet travels as one unit without handling single pieces.
What is a part load?
Shipping a few pallets together with other shipments in the same vehicle. You only pay for the space your goods take.
When does a full truck pay off?
Usually from about 6–7 loading metres or 5 tonnes of goods.
How many pallets fit in a van?
A van takes up to 5 pallets, a curtain-sided van up to 10 pallets.
How many pallets fit in a truck?
A standard trailer holds 33 euro pallets and around 24 tonnes.
Why are parcels damaged more often?
They pass through sorting lines and are transhipped several times; each piece also travels separately.
Is a direct run faster than a groupage network?
Yes. The vehicle drives directly from consignor to consignee without transhipment or waiting for other shipments.
How should fragile goods be shipped?
Ideally on a firmly wrapped pallet, preferably on a direct run without transhipment.
What if the consignee has no dock or forklift?
We arrange a vehicle with a tail lift that lowers the pallet to the ground.
How are chilled goods shipped?
In a temperature-controlled vehicle or trailer; the shipper sets the temperature range.
How do I find out how much space my pallets take?
Loading metres follow from pallet size and stackability — the LDM calculator on our website helps.
Can pallets from different suppliers be combined?
Yes, loadings at several places can be combined into one run.
What details do you need for an enquiry?
Loading and delivery address, number and size of pallets, weight, type of goods and deadline.
Do you ship a single pallet?
Yes, a single pallet travels as a part load or by van, depending on the deadline.
