Why loading metres decide
Wardrobes, sofas or kitchens take a lot of space in a trailer but weigh little. The truck is full before it reaches its payload, so furniture transport is planned and priced by loading metres. For reference: a full truck has 13.6 loading metres and holds 33 euro pallets.
Whether items can be stacked changes the space needed considerably. Non-stackable upholstered items take the full height, while flat-packed items in cartons can safely be stacked.
Packing and surface protection
- Film and cartons protect against dust, moisture and abrasion.
- Corner and edge protectors — edges and corners are damaged most often.
- Glass parts and mirrors separately, in rigid packaging and upright.
- Small parts and fittings in boxes, labelled to the matching item.
Loading and securing
Items are placed so that delicate surfaces do not touch; interlayers or blankets go between them. The whole load is secured with straps so nothing shifts when braking. Smaller items are easier to handle on pallets — see How to prepare pallets for transport.
Where furniture comes from
Italy is a major producer — especially the Brianza near Milan with its design furniture tradition. The second big source is Poland, one of Europe’s largest furniture producers. From Italy goods usually arrive in 2–3 days, from Poland in 1–2 days.
Unloading at a shop, hotel or building site
Shops, hotels and building sites often have no dock. Then a vehicle with a tail lift is needed — more in Loading and unloading without a dock. For hotel furnishing on the islands see hotel equipment transport to the Balearics.
